Monsignor Giulio Ricci, a prominent figure in the field of sindonology, the scientific and devotional study of the Shroud of Turin, spent decades immersed in research, theological contemplation, and visual interpretations of the Shroud’s image. From these efforts emerged the striking Sindonic Crucifix, a work of sacred art grounded in forensic precision rather than artistic convention. One of these significant works is housed at the Church of Jesus the Good Shepherd in Monroe, Louisiana, under the care of Father Peter B. Mangum.
What makes this crucifix so exceptional is its deeply intentional anatomical accuracy. Its dimensions, posture, and the specifics of Christ’s wounds are all rendered according to the precise evidence observed on the Shroud of Turin. The result is a devotional image that transcends the symbolic to reflect a forensic, almost tangible echo of what the original image on the Shroud presents.
By encountering this crucifix, the faithful are invited not merely to gaze upon an image of the Crucified One but to confront the palpable reality of Christ’s suffering as demonstrated in the forensic contours that the Shroud uniquely preserves.
